TPS Context Values in our Computing Curriculum
TPS Computing Curriculum
Why is Computing important?
All pupils at Tottington Primary School have the right to have rich, deep learning experiences that balance all the aspects of computing. With technology playing such a significant role in society today, we believe ‘Computational Thinking’ is a skill children must be taught if they are able to participate effectively and safely in this digital world. A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with mathematics, science, and design and technology, and provides insights into both natural and artificial systems.
At Tottington Primary School, the core of computing is Computing Science in which pupils are introduced to a wide range of technology, including laptops, iPads, PCs and interactive whiteboards and a range of digital devices, allowing them to continually practise and improve the skills they learn. This ensures they become digitally literate so that they are able to express themselves and develop their ideas through information and computer technology- at a level suitable for the future workplace as active participates in a digital world.
What are the aims of our Computing curriculum?
At Tottington Primary School we are passionate about promoting high standards of computing and ICT. Our intent is that children should master Computing to such an extent that they can go on to have careers within Computing and make use of Computing and ICT effectively in their everyday lives, without being completely reliant on technology.
Our children will be taught to use technology responsibly and carefully, being mindful of how their behaviour, words and actions can affect others.
Our children will be taught Computing and ICT in a way that ensures progression of skills and follows a sequence to build on previous learning.
Children will gain experience and skills of a wide range of technology in a way that will enhance their learning opportunities, enabling them to use technology across a range of subjects to be creative and solve problems, ensuring they make progress. We aim to ensure our pupils are well rounded citizens of our local community and the wider world.
At TPS, we have a broad and balanced Computing and ICT curriculum that builds on previous learning and provides both support and challenge for learners. It allows our children to acquire the vital knowledge and skills required for the next stage of their learning journey and for adulthood. These enable the children of Tottington Primary School to become successful, active and positive members of their local community and wider world.
Computing Champions
We're excited to introduce you to our team of tech-savvy students from Key Stage 2, known as the Computing Champions. These talented youngsters are on a mission to bring the digital world to life at our primary school, making technology an engaging and integral part of our educational journey.
Why Do We Have Computing Champions?
Our Computing Champions program is founded on the belief that our students possess the potential to thrive in the digital landscape, provided they have the opportunity and empowerment to do so. The Computing Champions meet regularly to discuss and enhance our computing curriculum, ensuring it remains dynamic and relevant. At TPS, we are committed to harnessing the power of the computing curriculum to empower our students, not just in their educational journey but also in their future careers.
Paving the Way to Future Careers
To help our students grasp the impact of computing on future careers, we've established strong connections with educational technology companies and have even had the privilege of visiting the headquarters of TTS Resources. During our visit to TTS, our champions had the unique opportunity to participate in board meetings and gain valuable insights into how educational resources transition from concept to the classroom.
In September 2023, we were honored to host Google Consultant and Entrepreneur, Tara Jones. Tara is a prominent figure in the field of educational technology, and she shared her invaluable insights with our computing team, setting them on a path to explore the exciting world of education technology at the primary school level.
