Why is Design & Technology important?

Tottington Primary School delivers an inspiring, rigorous and practical Design and Technology curriculum. Through creativity and imagination, pupils design and create items that solve problems in the real world. Design and Technology enables children to draw on their maths, science, computing and art skills. Risk-taking is an integral to DT and once learnt, children become resourceful, innovative and enterprising. Through evaluation of real past and present Design and Technology, pupils become critical thinkers and see the purpose of design for the real world.

At TPS, we believe this world needs adults with these skills and traits: to design and think up engineering feats such as new, carbon free energy sources or synthetic fuel, fit for air travel. Without a creative, imaginative education, we would not produce creative, innovative adults to become ground breaking engineers, architects, technicians, inventors and designers.

What are the aims of our Design & Technology curriculum?

At Tottington Primary School we are passionate about promoting high standards of design tech understanding. Through combining the Early Years and National Curriculum with our TPS core values, our ambitious Design and Technology curriculum equips all our children with the necessary skills in the design field.

By the time they leave TPS, our children will have developed a sound understanding of the process of design, re-evaluation, self-assessment, purpose and the importance of innovation. They will associate DT with the task of problem solving through using resources, including digital technology, accurately and in an imaginative and creative way. Having been faced with a plethora of design challenges, they will have made a variety of products, which serve a real purpose. Vital knowledge and skills will be acquired, by the children, for the next stage of their learning journey.

Through our well-planned, and sequenced Design and Technology curriculum our children acquire the vital knowledge and skills required for the next stage of their learning journey and on into adulthood. This enables the children of Tottington Primary School to become successful, active and positive members of their local community and wider world.
