TPS PE Curriculum
Why is PE important?
At Tottington Primary School, we believe a high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
The purpose of teaching Physical Education is to give children the tools and understanding required to make a positive impact in their own physical health and well-being. Children who experience a wide variety of sports and physical skills will find it enhances life-long fitness, life choices and career opportunities. PE challenges and promotes self-esteem through the development of physical confidence, resilience, perseverance and a positive mindset. It teaches children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based physical activities.
What are the aims of our PE curriculum?
At Tottington Primary School, it is our aim that all pupils, regardless of background and ability, have access to a broad and balanced physical education curriculum. Through the delivery of learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed, it is our aim that children will have a strong foundation of fundamental movement skills starting in the Early Years, with children physically active in each lesson and being motivated to reach their optimum physical and emotional development. Our curriculum is ambitious, promoting ‘a healthy mind in a healthy body’ quoting Juvenal. Our children will understand the values of teamwork and collaborate effectively with others in a fair and cooperative manner. Our pupils are offered access to a range of after-school sports clubs, including those activities not delivered through the national curriculum. As well as this, all pupils will participate in competitive sport, both inside and out of the school, ensuring they do their best and display the skills of sportsmanship and self-discipline. Our children will leave with a clear understanding of the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle, aware of how a balanced diet and regular exercise contribute towards this.
