The intent of our Mathematics Curriculum

At Tottington Primary School we are passionate that children become fluent in the fundamental aspects of mathematics to enable them to experience the power and enjoyment of mathematics, whilst developing a sense of curiosity about the subject. Our children will be taught to secure a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through manageable steps, so they become masters of content, applying and being creative with new knowledge in many ways. We encourage our children to aspire to dive deeper into curriculum content, through ambitious challenges in all aspects of maths.

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Solve problems by applying mathematics to problems of all kinds with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios.
  • Reason mathematically by following lines of enquiry, presenting an argument or justification for a conjecture using mathematical language.
  • Make rich connections between maths and other areas of the curriculum, applying knowledge accurately.
  • Have an appreciation of number and operations, which enables calculations to be performed efficiently, fluently and accurately.
